Helpful Hints

When selecting a unit size be aware of how well your items will stack into the unit. Odd size items take up more room and fragile items cannot be stacked on or around very easily. Use caution when stacking on particle board or composite furniture, those items will not support heavy weight stacked on them for a long period of time. Remember to leave space at the top of your unit for air to circulate. Don't forget to include space for storage closets, attic, garage, shed, outdoor tools, outdoor furniture, bikes and toys.

Tips for packing your storage space:

  1. Store couches (not sofa-beds) and mattresses on end to maximize space.
  2. Protect mattresses and furniture with padding and covers. Do not use plastic on wood furniture; humidity may condense on plastic and cause damage.
  3. Wrap mirrors, pictures, and artwork with paper and padding. Never store them lying flat.
  4. Label the contents of all boxes on multiple sides for easier reference.
  5. Disassemble tables and bookcases and store them on their sides. Be sure to wrap and mark all pieces for convenient re-assembly.
  6. Store items you'll need most often at the front of the unit and place valuables toward the rear of the unit.
  7. Pack larger and heavier items on the bottom and smaller and lighter items on top.
  8. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors slightly ajar and clean before storing and don't forget to use the space insde them for extra storage!
  9. To retard rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing machine oil.
  10. A small efficiently packed unit will cost less than a larger unit with poor arranged contents.
  11. Check with your insurance agent to see if your homeowners or general casualty policy covers your possessions and inventory while they are being stored (most do at no additional cost if notified).
